Erosion Protection: Coastal Revetments

Sand dune protection using gabions and reno mattresses. See concept 3.
Erosion of a floodbank by high tide wave action in an esturary. Robust protection needed.
Geomac being installed to give robust protection to a floodbank. See Eco 37B.
Esturine floodbank protection for site provided by a geomac system. See Eco 37B.
Reno mattress with sand blinding infill to stabilise sand dunes.

Erosion energy in the coastal and estuarial environment is substantially greater than that encountered inland. Traditionally, layers of large stone or riprap have been used for coastal protection as they provide a rough surface to dissipate erosion energy. Encapsulating stones within gabions or mattresses thereby stopping it moving, increases the resistance of the revetment, and is a more efficient use of imported stone. Encapsulated stone mattresses also often have added ecological value.
