MacRES is a vertical concrete panel faced, reinforced soil retaining wall system for use in demanding applications. The global Maccaferri group has offered MacRES retaining walls in Europe, Asia and South Africa for the past three years.
MacRES in the UK features polymeric geosynthetic straps, ParawebTM, as the soil reinforcement elements which are placed in the ground in successive layers and connected to concrete facing panels. The is a unique ‘all-polymer’ loop and toggle connection between panel and soil reinforcement which removes all exposed steel connection details. Although MacRES is new to the UK market, the soil reinforcing element ParawebTM has been used for many years in vertical faced concrete panel reinforced soil systems with over 500,000m2 of walls completed.
The strength of the geosynthetic reinforcement is adjusted to suit the design loads. This makes the system simple to construct, as the standard concrete panels all have the same number of connection points. This optimises the efficiency of the structure and allows the construction of very tall structures capable of withstanding high loads.
ParawebTM was first used in mid-1970’s and therefore predates every polymeric soil reinforcement material in the world market. A monitored structure was built by Transport Research Laboratory in the UK in 1977 from which samples continue to be recovered for testing (Most recent results were presented by “Naughton et al” at Baton Rouge 2005) and show no change after 29 years of use.
This structure provided support data for the publication of the UK Department of Transport’s Technical Memorandum BE3/78 ‘Reinforced Earth Retaining Walls and Bridge Abutments for Embankments’ which gave guidance on the design and construction of reinforced earth structures. This was later superseded by BS8006.
MacRES is only offered as a design, supply and install solution by Maccaferri Construction Ltd. The MacRes panels can be cast either on site or, where space is at a premium, in remote casting facilities. Paraweb is manufactured in Britain by Linear Composites, a member of the Maccaferri Group of Companies.
