MAJOR PROJECT FEATURE:
What is thought to be the tallest reinforced earth structure ever to be built in Europe forms part of the new, RReshen to Kalimash motorway, currently nearing completion in Albania.
The motorway is the first to be built in Albania and is the country’s largest ever infrastructure project. It crosses the country through spectacular, mountainous terrain on a route from the Adriatic Sea to the country’s north east border with Kosovo.
The importance of the new road to Albania’s economy cannot be over-stated. At over 170km in total length, it joins the Port of Durres – considered to be the main port serving the Balkans – with Morine, close to the border with Kosovo. Journey times of between six and ten hours will be reduced to two by the new road, bringing an expected benefit to tourism and trade counted in tens of millions of Euros per year.
