Main Contractor, HACS Construction, [shown in photo] puts the finishing touches to a 4.5m high Maccaferri retaining wall, constructed to create space for new ward facilities at Bradford Royal Infirmary.
The 120m long, Macwall Versalok, segmental retaining wall is a crucial ground-works component in an ultra fast-track, modular ward installation project, built for Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
According to Structural Engineering Consultant and Director, Peter Lynes of Robinson Design Group of Shipley; “The Maccaferri solution was the only system available that satisfied the criteria of engineering capability, aesthetics and speed of installation”.
The £10m project involved deep rock-excavation within a severely constrained site. The Maccaferri wall forms a structural perimeter to the new building and allowed construction of the wards to be at the same level as existing buildings on the site.
The three story extension houses two wards and provides an additional 56 beds to the hospital. The wards were built in prefabricated modules which were craned into position over the pre- installed walls. The 18 week project is due for completion in late December 2008.
