Suitable for a wide range of applications - from low height landscaping structures to major civil engineering solutions

Maccaferri, specialists in retaining structures, soil reinforcement and erosion protection, has recently added a Timber Crib system to its comprehensive range of retaining structures. Cost effective, easy to build and environmentally friendly, Timber Crib is an increasingly popular alternative to gabions and segmental retaining wall systems and is suitable for a wide range of retaining wall applications from low height landscaping structures to major civil engineering applications.
Constructed on a concrete foundation with a 1:4 face batter, Timber Crib retaining walls are mass-gravity structures. Comprising a series of interlocking timber units, filled with clean, graded stone, the weight of the structure is sufficient to prevent it being destabilised by the retained material. Complying with BS8002:1994 Code of Practice for Earth Retaining Structures, Timber Crib walls can be constructed with confidence.
Providing an attractive feature in addition to a sound engineering solution, Timber Crib retaining walls can be enhanced by planting climbing species at the foot of the wall. Alternatively, Maccaferri can provide jute or coir grow bags to be inserted behind the front face during filling. Seeded with appropriate plants and a suitable ‘watering system’, Timber Crib walls can rapidly ‘green up’ with natural vegetation.
Quick and easy to construct, no specialist labour is required. Once the first Timber Crib header units are set into the concrete foundation, pre-cut notches ensure rapid assembly of the cellular structure with interlocking timbers ensuring fast, accurate construction. Granular material is placed in the cells on completion of the crib courses as the skeleton rises.
An environmentally friendly product, Maccaferri Timber Crib is manufactured from Radiata pine taken from sustainable forests accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council. All timber is treated against decay, insect and fungal attack, thereby exceeding the standards laid down in BS5268 Part 5 and ensuring long term durability.
The UK arm of the Italian-based Maccaferri Industrial Group, Maccaferri Ltd specialises in gabions, geotextiles, geogrids and geomats. In addition to a full range of products for retaining structures, soil reinforcement and erosion protection, the company offers design support, technical advice and where appropriate, indemnified design and construction services.
