Maccaferri provides design and supply retention wall solution for new residential development

The tallest Anchor Landmark retaining wall system to be constructed outside the US is nearing completion in Co.Galway, Ireland. Designed and supplied by Maccaferri Ltd, specialist in retaining structures, soil reinforcement and erosion protection, the wall will be up to 11 metres high when complete. As part of a major new residential development located on uneven ground, it is being used to create a level site for building and to protect the perimeter slopes.

Under construction by Michael Fitzgerald & Sons Ltd at Mullan Mor, Glenanail, the development of these new homes is on a disused landfill site. To stabilise the slopes at the boundaries and to extend the area of land available for construction, 3000m² of Anchor Landmark blocks and 2,800m² of Enkagrid PRO 60 geogrid have been used to construct the wall which is between 6 and 10 metres high. Meeting the specification laid down by consulting engineers Westcon Consulting, the system offers a robust and durable, fully vertical wall that is also quick and easy to build.

Recently awarded BBA Roads & Bridges certification, the Anchor Landmark system combines dry stacked blocks with Enkagrid PRO polymeric reinforcement and features a unique engineered polymer Anchor Lock Bar. This secures the geogrid in locking channels within the blocks to create a positive mechanical connection between the facing blocks and reinforcing material.

Combining a highly engineered reinforced wall solution with the visual appeal of conventional brickwork, Anchor Landmark blocks are available in a range of architectural masonry colours. Exposed faces feature an attractive textured finish that replicates natural stone.

Anchor Landmark blocks are manufactured by Northern Ireland based block and paving manufacturer, Acheson & Glover under license from Anchor Wall Systems Inc, based in Minnesota, USA. Maccaferri provides engineering and design support, and distributes the system throughout the UK and Ireland.
